James Richard Veitch (Admiral) and Elizabeth Veitch (nee Edwards), plot S31
James Richard Veitch was born on the 21st of September 1827 at the Isles of Scilly to James and Mary. He was baptized on the 26th of September 1827 also at the Isles of Scilly.
James entered the Royal Navy as an apprentice Mate in HMS Hastings in 1840, aged 13 years of age.
He was actively employed in the Syrian Campaign and was severely wounded in the face at the storming of Acre, partially losing his sight in one eye.
The Battle of Acre (also known as the Fourth Battle of Acre) occurred on the 3rd of November 1840. Mehmet Ali had refused the conditions the Quadrilateral Alliance sought to impose. On the 3rd of November, Acre was shelled by a combined British and Ottoman fleet under Admiral Sir Robert Stopford. The town was largely destroyed, and the Egyptians withdrew and came to terms with the Alliance
He was also a Lieutenant on the Pacific Station in HMS Inconstant (1855-57), including a turn of duty in the Baltic.

His obituary notice in The Times also credits him with an award of the ‘Medal from the Turkish Government’.
He was promoted to Commander in May 1857 and served aboard HMS Boscawen (1858-60) and HMS Revenge (1861-62) and was later promoted to Captain.

He was placed on the retired list in April 1870 and was promoted to Rear-Admiral in March 1878, Vice-Admiral in July 1884 and Admiral in December 1888.
James married Elizabeth Edwards in the 3rd quarter of 1857 at the Isles of Scilly.
